My Story

Hey there! I’m Karen — wife, mom, certified health and wellness coach, and full-time nutrition nerd.

I started Berry Rooted as a cozy corner of the internet to share wholesome recipes, simple wellness tips, and little life hacks that actually make healthy living doable (and dare I say, fun!).

Whether you’re feeding your family, fueling your body, or just trying to feel a bit more “you” in your day-to-day, I’ve got you.

What “Wholesome” Means to Me

To me, wholesome is more than just eating healthy—it’s about feeling good, inside and out. It’s food that fuels your energy, not your guilt. It’s wellness that fits into real life, not something that takes it over.

I believe healthy eating doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. Most of my recipes come together with simple, real ingredients—things like canned beans, frozen fruits and veggies, oats, and pantry staples that make healthy cooking doable on busy days. Because as a mom, I get it: sometimes dinner needs to be both fast and nourishing.

Wholesome means cooking with love, not stress; making space for rest, not restriction. It’s about balance, progress, and giving yourself grace in the process.

My Approach to Food

Healthy eating doesn’t have to be complicated or rigid. I follow a balanced, real-food approach that focuses on nourishment, not restriction. Here’s what that looks like in everyday life:

  1. Eat a variety of foods.
A colorful plate is a healthy plate. I aim for balance—a mix of fruits, veggies, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats to keep energy steady and nutrients diverse.
  2. Prioritize whole, minimally processed foods.
Real food first. The fewer ingredients on the label, the better. I limit ultra-processed foods that are often loaded with added sugars, unhealthy fats, and sodium.
  3. Load up on fruits and veggies.
At least five servings a day—fresh, frozen, or canned (it all counts!). A rainbow of produce helps cover the full spectrum of vitamins and minerals your body thrives on.
  4. Choose whole grains over refined ones.
Think brown rice, quinoa, oats, and whole-grain bread. More fiber, more nutrients, more staying power.
  5. Include lean protein sources.
Fish, poultry, eggs, legumes, nuts, seeds, and dairy all have a place here. Protein supports strength, metabolism, and keeps you full longer.
  6. Opt for healthy fats.
Avocados, nuts, seeds, olive oil—these are the fats that love you back. I keep saturated and trans fats (like fried foods and processed snacks) to a minimum.
  7. Limit added sugars.
I believe sweetness should come from nature when possible—like fruit or a drizzle of honey—rather than heavily processed treats or sugary drinks.
  8. Stay hydrated.
Water is the simplest self-care habit. I sip throughout the day and reach for herbal teas or sparkling water instead of sugary drinks.
  9. Listen to your body.
Eat when you’re truly hungry, stop when you’re satisfied, and savor your food. Mindful eating builds a peaceful relationship with food and body.
  10. Keep it sustainable.
Your healthiest diet is the one you can maintain. Budget, time, and preferences matter—so flexibility always wins over perfection.
  11. Enjoy your food.
Food is connection, culture, and joy. Whether it’s a family favorite or a new recipe, eat what you love and make mealtime something to look forward to.
